image description: screenshot of a google image search with “burn scar” in the text box and 3 results below. the first one is a skin care article titled “what is the impact of burn scars on your skin?” second one is a dermatology article titled “laser treatment of burn scars”. both of these have images of actual burn scars shown as thumbnails. the third one is titled “Monster FX silicone burns scar prosthetic” with a fake looking “prosthetic” make-up. the full title includes “ The perfect  addition to any costume to make a gory and realistic effect! “. end image description

THIS is the type of shit i mean when i say people with facial differences and especially burn survivors are treated like fucking shit. THIRD RESULT of the phrase burn scar is a fucking fake halloween prosthetic because “oohh so gore and scary!!”. and yet it’s fucking crickets and the only people who talk about it once a year are tumblr posts that read as “don’t call those ugly abnormal deformed gross people ugly!!!” (hyperbole but it is so fucking annoying how they all use the most negative terms i have ever heard and don’t bother to check what we call our community :-) :-) ).

SPEAK UP and say something when you see the millionth person of the day tagging a burn survivor or a person with a craniofacial condition as body horror. call your friends out for putting a trigger warning for “gore” when someone dares to have a scar. don’t go watch the 100th movie of the year where the villain has a facial difference (because it obviously makes you evil and kill puppies). get at least half as pissed off as me when you see that another able-bodied actor is cast to play a person with Treacher collins syndrome in some movie because they can’t bother to work with an actual disabled person or god forbid hiring and thus giving money to someone you’re making a movie about. everyone knows that it should be the person who has the most acting skill and fits the role the most and we all know that people who need to put on “Monster FX prosthetic scar gore effect” know how people with FD are the best. stop treating us like some fucking monsters that couldn’t possibly exist in real life and see your bullshit all day every day. maybe even ask yourself why does everyone think of people who drool, have strabismus, skull conditions, hypertelorism or facial palsy/paralysis as a fucking laughingstock. no really. we see your fucking memes and reaction images and oh no it’s a disabled person existing again? must be a coincidence… i could never be ableist because i reblogged something about eugenics being kinda wack last week

i feel like i could go for another hour just listing this shit but at the end of the day this post will have like 10 reblogs and 3 of them will tell me about how their OC who’s a “burn victim” is only a bad guy who kills people like that because of their trauma and definitely nothing that could involve the author’s bias. it’s not like you made it or anything. learn to draw facial differences properly BTW red overlay layer isn’t really how a burn scar looks like to anyone who has seen a scar before :)

i think especially with relatively near future sci-fi and alternate present/just off reality sci-fi and fantasy, it’s a lot more effective to play off of “this word is the same, but the thing it refers to is in fact different than what you’ll initially picture or assume” than to invent a bunch of cutesy fake slang (again, ESPECIALLY for things we already have good words for)

like, for a real life example of what im talking about– we had “phones” in 1977, and we still have “phones” in 2017, but MAN would a time traveler from the 70s be confused by the things we call “phones” now, and the ways we use and relate to them– “im typing this text post on my phone, and autocorrect keeps cramping my style” is a straightforward and easily understandable sentence to me in 2017. it would sound like word salad to someone from 1977. (how can you TYPE something on a PHONE?? what does “post” mean in this context, or “text”? the fuck is “autocorrect”??)

but we still call them “phones”, you know, and not, idk, “cyberrectangles”
